Letter to the Editor - Smelter Pledge - NW Star 20/1/2015
Most would know that Robbie Katter is not prone to blowing his own trumpet.
So it becomes my duty to advise that around 12 months ago the MP for Mount Isa Robbie Katter procured a meeting for MIM officials with the two relevant Government ministers.
When requesting the meeting, the MP advised he would not be making any political mileage out of any such meeting. I happened to be with the MP a week or so later and he told me about the meeting. He seemed most elated that MIM people had been most impressed and said that they now saw real hope.
The discussions continued and picked up steam with the Mount Isa MP becoming increasingly confident that 'The Isa' was going to have a big win.
We now applaud this decision by the Queensland Government and thank them.
I hope the MP for Mount Isa Robbie Katter realises that his and others dogged determination and unwavering belief that you can make it happen achieved a wonderful breakthrough for North West Queensland.
Whilst MIM, the Government and others deserve great credit, the MP’s achievement here highlights the immense power and ability of a committed small party to achieve the goals of their people, even if it has to be at the expense of their own political interests.
(The re-opening of the live cattle market leaps out as another example to me of how, when determined, a small crisis committee, a tiny political party and a wonderfully enlightened Indonesian Ambassador could and did deliver an extra $350M per year into North Queensland.)
I believe, and am confident that my father and grandfather would have agreed, that Robbie is the best of the Katters.
