Katter hijacks parliament to push supermarket divestiture
Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) MP Bob Katter has called for immediate action on supermarket divestiture and genuine reform, following his attempt to introduce legislation in Parliament yesterday.
His suspension of standing orders (SSO) to bring on the Reducing Supermarket Dominance Bill was blocked by the government and the Liberals, with the Nationals abstaining from the vote.
“Increasing penalties to $10 million on supermarkets might sound good, but it’s nothing more than ideological window dressing,” Mr Katter said.
“Without proper investigation, enforcement, capping markups, and mandatory divestiture, we won’t see real reform. Families and farmers won’t get a fair deal. We need action, not hollow headlines.”
Yesterday afternoon, Mr Katter moved to open debate on his bill, which proposes genuine reforms to break up the supermarket duopoly and ensure fairness in pricing and profits.
“This government of ideology, backed by their bedmate in the Liberals, voted against it. The Nationals were too cowardly or spineless to vote either way. They hid in the shadows while ordinary Australians continue to pay the price,” he said.
Mr Katter highlighted the frustration of Australians who are tired of political grandstanding without meaningful action.
He issued a challenge to the government, calling for accountability and a willingness to engage in genuine debate.
“If the government can’t govern, and if their legislation can’t stand up to robust debate, then they should call an election now. Let Australians vote for someone who can actually deliver,” Mr Katter demanded.
Mr Katter remains steadfast in his commitment to breaking up the supermarket monopoly and delivering fairness across the supply chain.
“We started the year with this fight and we are determined to fight for supermarket reforms that Australians need, and we won’t back down until justice is done.”
