Call for Cup Day holiday

Tweet about this post

Independent Member for Kennedy Bob Katter is backing a call to make the Melbourne Cup a national holiday.

What has been described in the media as “the most unproductive day of the year” should be ratified as an official day off to celebrate one of Australia’s few genuine traditions.

“As it is, many employees take the day off and many businesses shut their doors early – let’s make it official so that all Australians can enjoy the day,” Mr Katter said.

“They don’t call it ‘the race that stops the nation’ for nothing – it really does bring Australia to a halt, uniting people across the country. People embrace the event whether or not they’re interested in racing.

“On top of that, that the day provides a great opportunity for community organisations to organise fundraisers and for small regional racing clubs to hold meetings or functions.

“If Melbourne Cup Day was a public holiday, more people would be available to support these events and engage with their community.

“I can think of at least one public holiday that is no longer relevant in modern Australia. Maybe this could be one that is.

“Let’s face it – the Melbourne Cup is not just about Melbourne. It’s about Australia."
