Australia must look for new Asian markets as product is dumped
KENNEDY MP, Bob Katter, is calling on whoever forms government after the May 21 election to push for market access for Australia’s fruit and vegetables into new Asian markets, to make up for the slump in trade due to China’s export ban.
Avocado and mango farmers in Mr Katter’s electorate have been forced to dump product due to a lack of overseas market access and oversupply issues.[1]
The Australian Fresh Produce Alliance says the industry requires new and improved market access to Japan for avocados, mangoes, grapes, citrus, blueberries, and apples.

Mr Katter said his long-term policy view is that Australia should diversify trade into other Asian markets rather than rely solely on China who are proving to be an erratic trading nation.
“Not enough effort has been made by the Government to open up the VIP markets (Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines) as well Japan, South Korea, and Thailand,” Mr Katter said.
“There are nearly 300 million people in Indonesia, nearly 150 million people in Japan, 100 million people in Vietnam, 100 million in Philippines, and 50 million in South Korea. Who cares about China when our producers could access that amount of people?
“I repeat, not enough effort has been made by the current Government to open new markets. I saw half a kilometre of mangoes going to waste on the Atherton Tablelands and we are also having an oversupply of avocados.
“Senior negotiators should be sent by Australia into these countries.
“The LNP Government have continuously shot their mouth off at China to the detriment of our farmers but haven’t done a thing to increase market access in Asia in countries such as Japan.”
