Kennedy MP, Bob Katter, has fired a warning shot at Labor that he will become ‘extremely hostile’ if they win Government and attempt to close the live export industry.
Media reports state live sheep exports would be banned by a federal Labor government, but the party will not confirm a time frame for its plan.[1]
“I warn the ALP that the last time they closed the live animal trade I played a key role in getting rid of their leader Julia Gillard,” Bob Katter said.
“Kevin Rudd got back in as PM and the market reopened to Indonesia. I don’t have many sheep in my electorate, but I am serving notice on the ALP. Remember what happened last time.
“I would like to know what industries we are going to have left under the major parties. They are both planning to close down coal mining with their net zero by 2050 commitments. Now, Labor is talking about closing sheep exports, where will they go to next?
“They are so spiritually and intellectually bankrupt that they keep going on with this rubbish. Queensland has the four C’s, copper, cane, coal and cattle. You destroy them and you haven’t got much left.
“If we get our dam schemes up at Hells Gates, Charters Towers and Hughenden we will increase our cattle numbers and be able to open two or three meatworks, but at the moment the northern cattle industry is reliant on live export.”
KAP Candidate for Herbert, Clynton Hawks, said live export is the lifeblood of the North Queensland cattle industry with over 395 thousand cattle exported in the 2019-2020 financial year.
“It is quite clear the live export industry boosts the North Queensland economy,” he said.
“We cannot risk Labor banning the live export trade out of the port of Townsville, this would have devastating effects on not only the live export industry but also the future of the Port.
“Labor will be condemned if it goes down this road and destroys our live export trade. The Katter’s Australian Party is the only party standing up for primary industry.”
“Where do the ALP candidates for Herbert and Kennedy stand on this issue?”
