KAP Member for Kennedy has urged his fellow Australians to ‘Go Bananas’ and eat another banana, Australian’s favourite snack, each day in response to the banana industry’s glut.

Mr Katter’s call for Australians to eat more bananas, follows the Australian Banana Growers' Council board member Steve Lizzio’s comments on ABC radio, where a warm, wet start to winter in the banana hub of far north Queensland has led to an oversupply of bananas and bananas selling below the cost of production.

“It is the most consumed produce on the shelves of our supermarkets and we are asking Australia to have two bananas a day, instead of one”, Mr Katter said.

As a week of endurance racing starts this weekend for the 2016 Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, starting with the Port Douglas Coral Coast triathlon and culminating in the Cairns Ironman, Mr Katter has pointed out the benefits of North Queensland bananas to competitors and spectators.

“There is no better form of natural energy than the humble banana,” Mr Katter said.

Following in the footsteps or Kennedy ‘Super Chefs’, Mt Isa residents and ‘My Kitchen Rules’ runners-up Jac and Shaz, Mr Katter has also provided his own favourite banana recipes.

The FNQ Finger (a banana sandwich)

Take an FNQ Banana, add a slice of cheese, and some cooked bacon, then toast until the cheese has melted. Cut into fingers. Serve with a cappuccino.

‘Rum and Nana’

“I pinched this recipe from the Annual Innisfail Banana Races. It’s the perfect desert to enjoy after dinner while watching Queensland win the State or Origin tonight.”

Fry a banana on the BBQ, add a dash (or four) of rum. Serve with Ice Cream.
